Stitch rows should be dense, straight and evenly spaced, with minimal backing showing between them. Drainage holes should be clean and regularly spaced. The secondary coating should look continuous and well bonded rather than patchy.
Try to pull a tuft out. Grip a small group of blades and tug firmly. Properly locked tufts do not budge. If fibres come away in your fingers, the tuft bind is weak, and that turf will shed at every join and cut edge for the rest of its life.
Flex and roll the sample. Bend the piece backwards on itself. The backing should flex without cracking, splitting or making a snapping noise, and it should not feel brittle or plasticky. Then roll it up and let it go: it should relax rather than hold a curl.
Part the pile with your fingers. If you can see backing from directly above without pushing anything aside, density is low regardless of the specification sheet. Then rub the surface briskly with your palm. Excessive loose fibre coming away is a poor sign.
Leave it outside for a fortnight. If you have time before committing, put the sample in the sunniest spot in your yard and check the colour and stiffness against a second piece kept indoors. It proves nothing about the ten-year outcome, but it does catch products that shift noticeably in two weeks.

Which specification to prioritise for which use
There is no product that is best at everything, and the trade-offs are real. Match the specification to what the space actually does.
Dogs. Prioritise backing and pile height, in that order.
