Two patterns are worth pulling out of that table. First, mats and tiles are the most expensive turf in the shop per square metre, by a wide margin. They are convenience formats for a balcony, a doorway or a pet patch, and using them to cover a lawn would cost you double. Second, pile height tracks price closely, which is a reasonable proxy but not a complete one, because the specs that separate a good 35mm turf from a mediocre one are not published here.
The accessories nobody budgets for
Turf is the headline number. These are the line items that turn up at the register.

On top of that you need sand. Bunnings' own laying guide calls for 10kg to 15kg per square metre, and the Real Tuff product page lists a 12kg per square metre infill rate. That is a real weight of material to buy, transport and spread.
A worked example: a 40m² Melbourne backyard
Take a typical small-to-mid backyard at 40 square metres, using the 35mm Real Tuff prepacked roll at $50.24 per square metre. Here is the honest arithmetic, with the gaps marked as gaps.

We have deliberately not invented numbers for sand, road base or compactor hire. They vary by supplier and by how much base you actually need, and a made-up figure here would be worse than no figure. Ring your local supplier or check hire rates before you finalise a budget.
The comparison: a professional supply-and-install job in Australia generally runs $90 to $130 per square metre, so the same 40m² yard lands somewhere around $3,600 to $5,200 installed, with the base, the compaction, the seams, the edging and a workmanship guarantee included.
So the DIY saving on this job is real, and on a like-for-like basis it is somewhere in the range of $1,400 to $3,000 before you price the three unknowns, minus a weekend or two of hard physical work and the risk that the base is not right. That is a genuine decision with a genuine trade-off, which is rather different from the "DIY is obviously cheaper" framing most people start with. On a small courtyard with an existing hard base, DIY wins comfortably. On a full lawn needing excavation, the gap closes and the risk sits entirely with you.
Which Bunnings turf suits which job
A short, opinionated guide, given the specs Bunnings publishes.
- Small patch, shed surround, temporary cover: the 9mm to 12mm Coolaroo and DIY Turf range. Cheap, short pile, does the job, will not pass for a lawn up close.
- Balcony or doorway: mats and tiles, despite the per-square-metre cost, because you are buying the convenience of a finished edge on a tiny area.
- Dog run or a play area: K9 Tuff at 25mm is the short-pile, high-traffic option in the range. Short pile is genuinely easier to clean, which matters more with pets than plushness does. Our pet turf guide for Melbourne goes into the drainage and hygiene side.
- A lawn you will actually look at: 35mm to 40mm Real Tuff, Luxury Tuff or Balm Tuff. This is where you should also get a trade quote for comparison, because at $50 per square metre supply-only you are already paying trade-range prices.
- High-traffic thoroughfare, indoor or out: Multi Tuff, which the manufacturer describes as having resilient non-directional fibres. Non-directional matters at seams, where matching the grain is a common DIY failure point.
The specs Bunnings does not publish, and which a supplier normally will, are backing type and UV warranty term. On a shaded side path that hardly matters. On a north-facing lawn in full Melbourne sun it matters a lot, and it is a fair reason to at least ask the question before spending two thousand dollars.

How much is fake grass at Bunnings?
As at 15 August 2026, Bunnings synthetic turf runs from about $17.83 per square metre for 9mm Coolaroo up to roughly $51.50 per square metre for 40mm Tuff Turf Balm Tuff. Small mats start at $12.99 for a 1 x 1m piece, and turf tiles work out dearer again per square metre. All of those are supply-only prices.
What is the cheapest artificial grass at Bunnings?
By price per square metre, the 18mm 1 x 3m synthetic grass turf mat at $39.80 works out to about $13.27 per square metre, and the 9mm Coolaroo Handy range sits around $17.14 to $17.83. Be aware that the cheapest options are short-pile utility products. They suit a shed surround, a small patch or a temporary cover far better than they suit a lawn you will look at every day.
How wide are Bunnings artificial grass rolls?
The landscape rolls are 1.8m wide for the DIY Turf and Tuff Turf lineal ranges, and 1.83m for Coolaroo. Prepacked rolls come in 1m and 1.8m widths in 3m, 4m, 5m and 10m lengths. Roll width matters more than people expect, because it determines how many seams you end up with across a given yard.
How much sand do I need under Bunnings artificial grass?
Bunnings' own laying guide specifies 10kg to 15kg of sand per square metre, and the Real Tuff product page lists a 12kg per square metre infill rate. For a 40m² yard that is roughly 400kg to 600kg of sand, which is a genuine cost and a genuine logistics problem that is easy to leave out of a DIY budget.
Is it cheaper to install artificial grass yourself?
Usually yes, but by less than most people assume, and the saving is in labour rather than materials. A professional supply-and-install job in Melbourne generally runs $90 to $130 per square metre. Bunnings' premium turf alone is around $50 to $52 per square metre before sand, adhesive, tape, pegs, base materials or compactor hire. The gap narrows quickly once you cost the whole job honestly.
Does Bunnings publish the warranty and backing type for its turf?
Not on its product pages, in our checking. Backing type (latex or polyurethane) and UV warranty term are two specifications trade suppliers will normally give you on a data sheet, and they are the two that matter most on a large sun-exposed lawn. We are not going to guess at figures Bunnings does not publish. If those specs matter for your job, ask a supplier directly.
